ÖZ-KAN Makina is an innovative company devoted to designing and manufacturing butterfly, check and air release valves for raw, drinking and sea water applications. The company delivers mission critical components for applications all over the world, from Australia to South Africa, from Spain to Malaysia.

Recently ÖZ-KAN began the design of 2.5 m-seat-diameter valves to be installed over 10,000km from their Izmir factory. In these situations there is no room for mistakes so the engineering team invested in CFdesign to ensure success.

Mehmet Tunc GÜNES, R&D manager at ÖZ-KAN Makina explains that all parts and assemblies are designed Autodesk Inventor. CFdesign is launched within the Inventor interface and the native model instantly opens in CFdesign where engineers can optimize the flow patterns for better product efficiency. Static analyses as well as motion analyses are run to assess the flow performances and the dynamic stability of the valves. Both flow-driven motion and motion-driven flow scenarios are evaluated.

“Accuracy is within 5% of our test bench results”, says GÜNES “and we’re eager to start using CFdesign to try out a few innovative ideas we’ve had for our new valve project, specifically modifying the symmetry of the body”. Indeed, CFdesign is a real innovation booster. Its integration with Autodesk Inventor and highly automated workflow makes it accessible to the whole Engineering team and allows them to see how changes in the geometry affect the flow performance.

For new products, “all flow characteristics are known before cutting metal! “And this is quite helpful at the proposal stage to assess cost and feasibility on a market that’s getting more and more demanding” highlights GÜNES.

Once the design is optimized for flow, structural analyses are also run to improve strength and optimize material choices. ÖZ-KAN Makina is using CFdesign and Autodesk Inventor to fully take advantage of the digital prototyping paradigm, reducing risk and time-to-market while getting way ahead of the competition.
